1957 Fender Low-Power
Tweed Twin chassis restoration
Part 2

Triad 7993

Original 7993 PT removed. I marked the leads for easier assembly later.

Cleaning process

I had started working on removing the grunge off the outside of the chassis. Rectifier circuit was done first here. Now, because the original choke was open (gee, uh, no wonder heh, heh), I went ahead and ordered a Mercury Magnetics replacement. For those who want to know, MM transformers are the elite/cream of the crop transformers made for Fender replacements. They bolt right in, and are the exact size too. And tone . . . ask Eric Clapton about his.

Faceplate before cleaning

Original faceplate above before cleaning. I cleaned it up being extremely careful NOT to remove what original lettering was left. The job turned out OK, and most of what was left was still legible.

Shiny

Chassis externally clean. It was at this point that I decided to go ahead and order new MM trannies for the PT and OT. I worked dilligently on restoring the original PT leads, but by the time I got those original wires to a point where it was safe, I couldn't get the bell cover back on. I didn't want to mod the tranny. I was also suspicious of the original OT, even though it ohmed out OK. Time also started becoming a factor here. The mounting flanges on the Triad OT were also broken. I tried several different mods to try and mount that OT so it wouldn;t move around, but in the end, I decided in the matter of safety and tone to go ahead and get the MM OT as well.

Rectifier circuit before

Note the grunge and bare hookup wires in the pic above. This was one of the first things I cleaned up after the chassis board was done.

Rectifier circuit after

Cleaned and rebuilt using exact color and gauge cloth hookup wire. I also physically removed, cleaned and retensioned then reinstalled both rectifier sockets and mounting nuts/screws.
